St Luke’s Home Newsletter November 2021
Executive Director Report
November is the month of gratitude.
Many of us have the tradition of saying what we are grateful for at the Thanksgiving table. Gratitude is the “thankful appreciation for what we have.” Gratitude helps us feel more positive emotions and keeps us in the present moment. There are many benefits of practicing gratitude, including increased feelings of happiness and being in a positive mood, improved sleep, reduced stress and burnout, and increased resilience. Gratitude has a huge impact on our emotional well-being. I love this quote from Epictetus, “he is a wise man who does not grieve for the things which he has not, but rejoices for those which he has.” If we stay present with what we have, joy and happiness will abound. I continue to have gratitude for all that St Luke’s Home has. We are full of activity, laughter, emotional and physical nourishment, friendship, love, beauty in our environment, and a strong sense of community. Happy Thanksgiving to everyone!

Rio’s Corner
Rio here! Investigative pup reporter giving you the up-to-date news on the happenings at St Luke’s Home.
It’s my favorite time of the year. The time when I take a minute to be thankful for my life and my friends here at St Luke’s Home. I think it’s a great idea to focus on the good stuff as often as you can, not in a Pollyanna sort of way, but in a way that acknowledges that rain comes to everyone, so we may as well focus on the rainbow. This year, I have so much to be grateful for: St Luke’s Home has another year of Elders being COVID-free. I love my Elder friends and I want them strong and healthy. Let me hear it! Woof woooof! St Luke’s Home Elders have had a ton of fun things to do these days including: SILVER CHEF CULINARY EVENT- I CAME; I SAW; I SNIFFED. Let me tell you it was marvelous, and not just the food! Not that I was permitted to get in line for the offerings from those fantastic chefs, mind you. I certainly didn’t get the chance to sample everything. However, for those two people who looked away from their plates at that critical moment (you know who you are) let me just say THANK-YOU. Ahem. It was a blast seeing my new friends of St Luke’s Home including the nice folks at Sonoran ENT, Tanks Green Stuff, Heidi from KGUN, Dan, and so many others! I also enjoyed seeing my long-time friends of St Luke’s Home including L’Don, Jacqueline, Maria Elena, Ruth, Michael, Karen, Linda, and more! I hope you saw all those great raffle baskets and got to hear the music from Mesquite Shade. When I was ushered back inside, I watched the festivities from the living room. Those students from Eller College who helped out as part of the United Ways Days of Caring were amazingly terrific. I stayed away from the judges’ table due to that incident in 2015 and I kept trying to show the camera crew my best side, but they were always looking at the chefs or judges! I think they missed a great photo op, but what can I say? My pals Caren and Sky were serving drinks but I was not permitted to enjoy that part whatsoever. My usual friends, the staff of St Luke’s Home, were there as well. They helped ensure everyone had a great time. They were awesome, although I hope next year, when Armando does his version of Wheel of Fortune, he remembers to put some dog treats in there. What’s a dog going to do with wine glasses? I am very grateful to Candy, our Elder Services Manager. She always has time for a kind and compassionate care of the Elders, and she always saves some love for me. You will usually find me in her office. It is a soothing place for me to sleep (plus she has treats).
I am thankful to my readers, and to all of the friends of St Luke’s Home. You are so kind and so generous, we are truly blessed by you. As that old song goes, “God only knows what I’d be without you.”
