The Third Annual Silver Chef Culinary Competition was a big success and I would like to thank everyone who supported us and joined us on that wonderful day. The weather was sunny and warm, the culinary delights filled our senses, and the executive chefs were on point! They served chili con pollo, squash blossoms, dessert dumplings, barbacoa nachos, and birria sandwiches. Extra thanks to our judges, Doug Levy from Feast, Jim Murphy from Kingfisher, and Sarah Lamberth from Noble Hops. They were looking for the dish that had it all: taste, appearance, creativity, and the best use of heritage ingredients. All the dishes were so tasty that it was a tough competition.

But they found it! Sal Miramontes, Executive Chef at St Luke’s Home, won the contest as Silver Chef of 2022!
We know we are lucky to have Sal because every day we eat deliciously healthy food, but winning this award was the “crème de la crème” for Sal. He did it and we are all so proud!

We also thank Erich Border from Hacienda at the Canyon (and the People’s Choice Winner!), Jeremy Montoya from Via Elegante, Susan Leber and Jen Treptow from Chef’s for Seniors for delighting us with their culinary arts. All the dishes were worthy of the win. Another big thanks to Missy Paschke-Wood, our amazing emcee, who kept the crowd going with her fun personality. And Arnie, our DJ and Photo Booth Sponsor, was a keeper! Be on the lookout for next year. You will not want to miss it! Thanks again to all.

Well, we finally made it! We are ready to begin the renovations. This month Lloyd Construction will be on-site to refresh our home. This will be a yearlong project and it is going to be an adventure, but in the end, we will have a home that our Elders will find comfortable, safe, and eco-friendly. We are currently getting everyone moved away from the first phase of the project.
If you have been by the home, you have seen our two shipping containers that were marvelously painted by Caren Detore and Tina Roesler. This will be our storage for the project and for years to come. The creativity that went into the painting is amazing and fun. We are thankful to Caren and Tina for their arduous work and donation of time.

We do need more funding to keep this renovation project moving. Please donate to the Major Gift Campaign to help St Luke’s Home complete this project in full and on time, and know that every dollar helps towards that goal. We will be posting lots of before and after photos so you can join us in the journey.
Lastly, I would like to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving. We have a lot to be thankful for this year. The biggest thanks is that we have each other, and though we might not always agree on everything, we can agree that St Luke’s Home is an amazing place full of love and life. We appreciate your ongoing support and remember to stay safe and warm this winter!

The Third Annual Silver Chef Culinary Competition was a Savory and Scrumptious Saturday, and I returned home ready for one of those comfy, quiet, full-tummy siestas that we all look forward to during the Thanksgiving season. I cuddled up on my fluffy bed in the hallway outside the Med Room (you know the one) and prepared for that peaceful pause that always follows the buzz of such a big event… but I couldn’t sleep.
It wasn’t long before I realized the activity wasn’t simmering down. Staff continued to haul things back and forth beside my bed, and Elders were traveling to and fro more than normal.
This dutiful reporter abandoned my need for a nap so that I could seek out an explanation of the happenings.

Moving! Many Elders are moving from one room to another: bed, furniture, boxed goods and all. I nosed into open doors to find new roommates discussing ways to arrange their temporary shared room for the best personal comfort. I poked around corners to find friend Rob Rockerfeller smoothing a safe path from a back door to the dog park so that it could also serve as a temporary smoking area for Residents. I peeked into the dining room to see the maintenance team, Fabian and Billy, dismantling the dining room tables. I wandered out passed the kitchen to find the halls of the east wing eerily quiet except in the last few corners where residents are still moving out.
So, I checked in with Terri who confirmed that Renovations were about to begin. Staff and Residents didn’t miss a step after Silver Chef before launching right back into preparations for the next project. Construction crews are scheduled to arrive November 14th and will start on the East Wing, Rooms 22 through 26, and the Dining Room. The First Five Rooms are expected to be ready for move in on Valentine’s Day, and the Dining Room will be ready for use much earlier than that.

I asked Terri the best way I could lend a hand, and she told me that it would be best if I just stay out of the way. She said that, because of my height (though tall for a dog) I am hard to see for a person carrying a big box.
Ever the team member ready to help however I can, I dutifully returned to my fluffy bed in the corner and recommenced my agenda for a nice afternoon nap. I have complete confidence the staff have this Renovation thing handled.
